WRAL Weather Alert Day: RDU smashes records with high of 106, scattered showers over the weekend

<p>I'm meteorologist K Campbell and the wr a severe weather center are high today, 106 degrees at RDU. This breaks the all time record. We have never been this hot in a triangle in history and the maximum heat index also broke the all time record at 118. Here's the thing though, there was a separate sensor at RDU. The National Weather Service actually placed one of their team members there, that sensor also recorded 105. So the airport does sometimes have that hot by to it. But at the airport today, it really did get to that 105 plus number. We've got a hot weekend. It won't be quite as bad as today though. 97 is the high for Saturday, 89 on Sunday, a lot more clouds around on Sunday and that should help us out. But let's talk about rain chances that's actually going to be the big story. This weekend, we finally have a pretty good chance for rain on Saturday that chance 70% during the late afternoon and evening. And this is all going to ramp up out ahead of a front. So the is bringing a pretty solid line of some scattered showers and storms to the mountains today that gets closer to a Saturday, still dry at noon. But by 12 o'clock we could start to see our first storms of the day popping up and those growing coverage, they become more widespread by 4567 o'clock. And then after sunset, they may gradually dissipate. But I think we still have a pretty good chance through about midnight, Sunday, we'll start out with a lot more clouds in the morning. The rain could pop up a little bit earlier in the day. I do think sun, it will be a bit more scattered in nature and kind of randomly placed across central North Carolina storm chances 60% Sunday as that front just dissipates and washes out over North Carolina. The flooding risk tomorrow is actually scattered. We could see some scattered flash flooding across the area. I know that we need any rain we can get. But if too much of it falls at once, we can't always soak that in. So just something to keep in mind. But at least we finally have some rain in the forecast with our growing drought across the state. Planner looks good early in the day tomorrow. You may need to assess the radar situation using the dual Doppler 5000 radar on the wr weather app. By the time we get to 23 clock, I think that's when those storms really start to grow on the radar. Looking ahead, your seven day forecast after the weekend begins to look a little bit more like typical July in North Carolina. Highs are in the upper eighties to lower nineties. It's still humid and there will be a chance for some summertime storms during the afternoon and evenings.</p>
