Tropical Depression 4 formed Friday night in the Atlantic Ocean, and much of North Carolina is in its path.

Hurricane watch for Florida's gulf coast; NC could see 6-10 inches of rain next week

<p>New this morning, we are tracking the tropics and there's a hurricane watch actually issued for parts of the northern Gulf coast of Florida just south of the Panhandle. There, you see a number of tropical storm watches and warnings that are in effect as we have tropical depression four, which is likely to become Debbie at some point today or tonight. Here's the latest path, the 5 a.m. path Saturday from the National Hurricane Center, you see it making landfall as either a tropical storm or a category one hurricane north of Tampa Florida. Then it's going to start to go up the east coast. But you notice as we go out in time that it stalls, it moves very, very slowly and that the National Hurricane Center's cone gets wider. That's a representation of anywhere that the center of the storm can be. So why is it so wide? Why is there uncertainty as we head into Wednesday and Thursday, a lot of that has to do with the fact that there's really not a whole lot guiding this thing when it gets closer to the north and South Carolina coastline, all the strong wind aloft is farther to the north. So this thing just kind of meanders. So regardless of if it's a tropical storm or a category, you want, hurricane, wherever this thing stalls, it is going to drop some big time rain. Here's just an early estimate on rain totals and you can see that there's the potential for anywhere from like 6 to 12 inches of rain along the coastlines of North and South Carolina. So that's going to be our main area of concern, at least for right now, farther inland. Do you go to Raleigh and Fayetteville between now and the next seven days, there's going to be the possibility of anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of rain. So localized flooding a possibility. So let's kind of walk through just some of the impacts here and this is really just very preliminary. It is subject to change based on the path of this storm. You see that the higher impact is going to be toward the coast where there's more surge, more flooding and higher rain totals, maybe even some more wind farther inland you go, especially as you go toward the triad and the mountains, they're not going to see a whole lot of impact from this triangle and Sand Hills will see some periods of rain, potentially some localized flooding. This is just the beginning of what is going to be a very active season for us, especially as we head into August, the climate prediction center, highlighting areas within the main development region to start seeing more activity over the course of the next 2 to 3 weeks, we will keep you posted every step of the way in the Wral Severe Weather center.</p>
