Hurricane Beryl has restrengthened into a Category 5 hurricane, reaching wind speeds of 165 mph.

I'm meteorologist Chris Michaels. Now for the past 12 hours, hurricane Beryl has been a monstrous category five storm. This is something that we ordinarily would talk about in August or September. This is the strongest July storm on record in the Atlantic basin. Previous record was Emily, that was uh 160 mile per hour at its center in 2005. The earliest that we had a storm with a 165 mile per hour sustained wind around the center that was Hurricane Allen in August of 1980. The 11 a.m. update has this storm as still a cat five with sustained winds 160 MPH, there's going to be a gradual weakening as it moves through the Caribbean gets closer to the Yucatan Peninsula by Friday morning. Let's talk about why. That's the case. We're plotting the wind shear and what wind shear does to tropical systems especially, is it kind of chops off or kind of disrupts the upper levels of the storm? So it becomes a little more disorganized and you see that as we go uh later in time and heading toward the weekend that wind shear kind of surrounds this system. So again, it is a cat five. As of the latest advisory, the next track comes out at 5 p.m. and then as we head into the weekend, it does look as though this should hopefully weaken behind that. There's another system with a 20 to 30% chance of development through that main development region, approaching the lesser and Tilly's uh next name on the list would be Debbie.
