In a newly revealed video, Republican candidate for governor Mark Robinson told supporters at a private event he would turn down federal funding for North Carolina schools. That's a popular idea among some conservatives, but it could come with a hefty price tag.

LAST SCHOOL YEAR, FEDERAL FUNDS MADE UP ABOUT 11% OF NORTH CAROLINA'S EDUCATION BUDGET. 688 MILLION DOLLARS SUPPORTED LOWER INCOME SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS. 564 MILLION PAY FOR SCHOOL MEALS AND OTHER PROGRAMS. &gt;&gt; 380 MILLION WENT TO SPECIAL EDUCATION AND 43 MILLION FUNDED VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION. THAT ADDS UP TO NEARLY 1.7 BILLION DOLLARS A LOT MORE THAN THE STATE BUDGET SURPLUS THIS YEAR.
