In a newly revealed video, Republican candidate for governor Mark Robinson told supporters at a private event he would turn down federal funding for North Carolina schools. That's a popular idea among some conservatives, but it could come with a hefty price tag.

LAST SCHOOL YEAR, FEDERAL FUNDS MADE UP ABOUT 11% OF NORTH CAROLINA'S EDUCATION BUDGET. 688 MILLION DOLLARS SUPPORTED LOWER INCOME SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS. 564 MILLION PAY FOR SCHOOL MEALS AND OTHER PROGRAMS. &gt;&gt; 380 MILLION WENT TO SPECIAL EDUCATION AND 43 MILLION FUNDED VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION. THAT ADDS UP TO NEARLY 1.7 BILLION DOLLARS A LOT MORE THAN THE STATE BUDGET SURPLUS THIS YEAR. OTHER STATES HAVE LOOKED AT TURNING DOWN FEDERAL EDUCATION FUNDS, TOO, INCLUDING UTAH, OKLAHOMA AND TENNESSEE. BUT SO FAR, NONE HAVE GONE THROUGH WITH IT.
