During Monday's court proceedings, Chatham County District Attorney Jeff Nieman said investigators found 39 empty beer cans on Quinten Kight's boat. Kight was charged with DWI and unintentionally causing the death of another person.

<p>We're going to be inside that courtroom where the suspect will be making his first appearance. The leading investigative agency, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, spent the greater part of the morning inside of here working with the district attorney's office to nail down the suspect's charges. Right now, 40 year old Quentin. is facing charges for operating a boat while under the influence. There could be more charges coming, and we do expect them to be. The Wildlife Resources Commission says Kite had been pulling a tube when he maneuvered the boat into a group of swimmers. According to arrest warrants, the victim who died on this Chatham County lake was 10-year old. Carol, she was a 5th grader at West Lake Elementary School. Jennifer Staley had been swimming in the water with her, and investigators tell us Staley lost her left leg. Operating a boat while under the influence of any impairing substance, whether that's drugs or alcohol, that is, is extremely dangerous and, uh, you know, every year throughout the summer we deal with a lot of different boat incidents that are alcohol or drug related. Uh, this is obviously a you know, extreme example of that it's a very, you know, tragic accident. We've also learned that Kite has a pending charge for felony hit and run with injury that's out of Moore County. Over the weekend, Westlake Elementary School sent a letter to families letting them know that a 5th grader at the school had died, and they also said they were gonna be providing grief counselors for children to help them process.
