The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched an investigation into the disappearances and deaths of two adopted children in Cumberland County.

New today, the state will investigate how Avante Devin was able to adopt Blake. And London. Devin authorities say she starved beat and eventually ordered other Children to dismember the brother and sister after their deaths. Hello, everyone and thank you for joining us. I'm Deborah Morgan and I'm Dan Haggerty. Those details are still startling. This is the new statement that we are getting now. It says that the state will do a thorough assessment of the decision making that led to the selection of Miss Devin as an adoptive parent. Wrls Fayetteville reporter Gilbert Bayes spoke with lawmakers about how to prevent something like this from happening again. Well, this is a troubling story with still a lot of questions. One of them, how could two of the five Children adopted by Avante Devin end up dead? And what if anything could lawmakers do to make sure the Department of Social Services involved would have done something to prevent it. Wrel has learned the State Department of Health and Human Services has launched an investigation into the adoptions of Blake and London Devon. The two Children were missing for years before they were reported missing. Their adoptive mother Avante. Devin has been charged with their murders. State Representative Marvin Lucas is a longtime educator. We can't afford to lose kids and that, that bothers me the, the the circumstances here, not only did she have those two Children, she was able to adopt five Children who, according to court papers, Devin adopted London in 2011 in Buncombe County, she adopted Blake two years later from Madison County. Lucas says there must be better accountability. No agency should be able to adopt than drop kids that's uh preliminary to the adoptive process once they adopted. I suppose we ought to be following up on that again. And if that is a state problem, we need to rectify that. State Senator Val Applewhite hopes the results of the investigation help state agencies better connect when it comes to keeping Children safe. Are you willing to introduce legislation if they find some things that need to be fixed? 00, absolutely. And I'm certain that, you know, regardless of what they find that this should be an issue that we take up during the next long session. And even prior Avante Devin faces two murder charges. She's being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond. She'll make her next court appearance on July 17th in Cumberland County, Gilbert Bays Wreo News. Meantime, Crystal's law, a bill generated to protect Children involved with DS S agencies after a WRL investigates report in Nash County has stalled in committee. Both lawmakers, we talked with plan to investigate why Crystal's law isn't moving forward. The Devin case again though, is a complicated one. There are several twists to it.
