Friday is a WRAL Weather Alert Day with rain likely and flash flooding possible. Rainfall totals will likely range from half-an-inch to two inches from west to east. A flood watch is in effect for central North Carolina.

Good morning. I'm meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. Today is a WRL weather alert day because of the potential for flooding. Already. This morning, we're seeing waves of rain moving through. This is going to feel very tropical for us. It's not a tropical system, but it will behave somewhat like one. We're going to have pockets of heavy rain. They will come and go in waves. So it's not going to be an all day rain. But when the wave comes in, there will be a lot of lightning with it and some heavy rain and that pattern will continue all day long. So today is a very good day to turn on WRL. I know you're watching us here on W dot com, but turn that TV on before you head out the door. So you'll know what to expect. Ken Smith covering traffic, letting you know where there's some backups because with this kind of rain, it will probably be a pretty tricky morning commute for us. We take a look at that flood watch that's in effect 1.5 to 3 inches of rain possible that could cause some flooding in places. We have a level two risk for flooding today. It's not a severe threat, but that flood risk definitely there and just be on the lookout for the lightning as well. We have a stationary front that's sitting across the area and then a low price system to our south. Those working together to push waves of rain across our area. Today, there's one o'clock, two o'clock, it begins to pull eastward a little bit as we get into the late afternoon and evening. But it's likely to be with us for parts of tonight and very early tomorrow as well. Now, temperatures will be cooler, so we will at least have a break from the intense heat. 83 in Raleigh, 82 Durham and 85 in Fayetteville feeling very tropical out there that dew point way. But 75 it's a very thick air mass and that doesn't change. We'll continue to see well into next week. So a brief break from the heat today, but it will feel like 99 on Saturday and we'll be getting close to heat advisory criteria on Sunday and we'll probably hit it a couple of days next week. We just have very hot conditions. Take a look at the seven day forecast which up to 99 on Monday and one on one on Tuesday. So it looks like a very hot week for next week as well. In the meantime, in terms of flooding, the best way to protect yourself is when you're driving. If there's water that's crossing the road, you want to turn around and head back the way you can.
