OFFICIALS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SHARE AN EXACT NUMBER MORE THAN 600,000 PEOPLE ACROSS OUR STATE ARE WITHOUT POWER. MORE THAN 100,000 OF THOSE OUTAGES ARE IN COUNTY ALONE. DUKE ENERGY HAS SAID THAT RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO ESTIMATION FOR WHEN THE POWER COULD BE TURNED BACK ON AS CREWS BATTLE DAMAGE LEFT BEHIND. AND THERE IS NO CELL PHONE SERVICE IN MUCH OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA CELL PHONE PROVIDERS SAY IT WILL BE SEVERAL DAYS UNTIL SERVICE CAN BE RESTORED. COMING UP IN ABOUT 4 MINUTES, WE'LL HEAR FROM GOVERNOR ROY COOPER ABOUT HOW PEOPLE CAN GET IN CONTACT WITH LOVED ONES AND THE WORK BEING DONE TO GET SUPPLIES AND HELP TO THE DEVASTATED COMMUNITIES. OFFICIALS IN COUNTY HELD A MEDIA BRIEFING JUST ABOUT 2 HOURS AGO CALLING THE STORM A NATURAL DISASTER OF BIBLICAL PROPORTION. SEARCH AND RESCUE CREWS HAVE BEEN WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK AND THOSE EFFORTS ARE STILL UNDERWAY AT THIS HOUR. THEY'VE CONDUCTED AT LEAST 150 SWIFT WATER RESCUES. OFFICIALS ARE GOING DOOR-TO-DOOR IN SOME CASES CONDUCTING WELL FOR WELFARE CHECKS. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, THEY CONTINUE TO RECOVER BODIES FROM THE FLOODING AND LANDSLIDES. AND OFFICIALS TELL US THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING &gt;&gt; AS THEY ASSESS THE DAMAGE, THIS IS LOOKING TO THE COUNTIES ALONE. &gt;&gt; HURRICANE KATRINA, YOU'VE HEARD US SAY CATASTROPHIC. THE DEVASTATION WITHIN OUR COUNTY. I SPOKE TO PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE AND THEY TELL ME THE PLACE ALMOST LOOKS UNRECOGNIZABLE. COMPLETE DEVASTATION. EVERY STREET HAS A DIFFERENT STORY OF DESTRUCTION TO TELL THE FLOODING THE MUD LIVES UPENDED, BUSINESS OWNERS AND PEOPLE LIVING IN BILTMORE VILLAGE ARE SAD. BUT WITH THIS HISTORIC STORM LEFT BEHIND ALL SAYING IT'S HARD TO SEE SO MANY HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN RUINS. AND IN TIMES OF DESPERATION, SOME PEOPLE HAVE RESORTED TO LOOTING STORES IMPACTED BY THE STORM. BUT THE STOREFRONT IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT, WRAL WAS THERE AS THE MOMENT PLAYED OUT WITHOUT LAW ENFORCEMENT. FOR THOSE OF US THAT WERE HERE, YOU KNOW, WATCHING THE TORRENTIAL RAPIDS RACING PAST THE HOTEL FOR ABOUT A DAY AND A HALF. &gt;&gt; WHAT WE SEE NOW IS BASICALLY WHAT WE THOUGHT WE'D SEE. THE TENNESSEE DOT SAYS A MUD SLIDE TOOK OUT THE EASTBOUND LANES ABOUT 3 MILES TO INTO NORTH CAROLINA. CLASSES AT APP STATE HAVE BEEN CANCELED THROUGH OCTOBER 4TH. STILLS ARE ASKED TO LIMIT THEIR WATER USAGE AND ARE REMINDED THERE IS A BOIL WATER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR BOONE CREWS FROM ACROSS THE STATE ARE RESPONDING TO HELP AFTER THE HISTORIC AND DESTRUCTIVE WEATHER EVENT.
