After a wet start to the weekend and a dip into slightly cooler temps, prepare for a triple-digit heat index to return on Saturday and get even higher on Sunday.

Weekend brings muggy heat, potential for storms -- but relief is on the horizon

<p>I'm meteorologist K Campbell and the wr a severe weather center, Poi it's been a busy day. We saw significant rain and for some of us that led to flooding, we do remain under a flood watch until midnight. Though the more widespread threat for flooding is over, it would be a much more isolated conditions now, but check out some of these rainfall totals are, there's one station registering almost four inches of rain. Several reports of over three inches in that area, Irwin, about three inches of rain. The Tar River at Rocky Mount 2.75 inches, about two inches for Lake Wheeler 2.5 in Chapel Hill, about an inch and a half for Fort Liberty. We had these two sources of moisture today. One moving in from the Gulf off the Atlantic converging right over North Carolina. And with that, we still have a lot of moisture in place. So overnight, we could see a line trying to develop of some additional rain. This would likely move through overnight into the early morning hours on Saturday. By the time we get to Saturday afternoon would be very isolated, any showers or thunderstorms that we see 90 degrees on Saturday, we got a lot of clouds to help keep that temperature down. But we are back up to 97 on Sunday. The chance for rain is high as Saturday morning, about a 40% chance in the morning. And in midday, that chance 30% only a 20% chance during the afternoon and rain in general would mainly be in the eastern half of our area on Saturday. We've got a lot of clouds around though, early in the day, about 90% of the sky will be covered by clouds. Once we get to the afternoon, we're gradually going to see some of those clouds thinning out. So you will see some sunshine by Saturday afternoon, that'll top our highs out right around 90. Enjoy it while you can. We're talking 97 Sunday, 99 Monday 101, Tuesday. And then by the end of next week, the heat backs off a little bit with highs in the upper eighties to lower nineties that will come with growing storm chances. And there are some signs that that pattern could last a little bit longer.</p>
