Potential Tropical Cyclone 4 formed Friday in the Atlantic and North Carolina is in the path.



Hurricane season 2024: Tropical Cyclone 4 forms in Atlantic Ocean, could impact NC next week

Hello, everyone. I'm meteorologist Mike Mays in the WRL severe weather center with our tropical update for this Friday night. We've seen changes take place tonight. Let's take a look at the big picture of what's happening in the tropics. We see a couple of areas of disturbed weather moving through the far eastern Atlantic and the one here in the middle at the bottom of the screen, it looks like it's starting to organize more that could potentially be in the Gulf of Mexico the week of the 12th of August. So we're going to have to watch that closely. So let's see what's happening close to home. There is now tropical depression number four, it formed at 11 o'clock with the advisory that came out from the National Hurricane Center. So as we take a look at the radar view out of Key West, you can see some of the bands of rain with tropical depression number four heading through the Keys making their way from east to west and these will only increase across South Florida as the storm moves over the Gulf of Mexico. At 11 o'clock, top winds were at 30 moving west northwest at 17. So the bottom line is they found a closed circulation. So now that there's a close circulation, the models will have a better, easier time initializing off of that and maybe come up with a better solution on what could occur. So here is the forecast track and intensities from the National Hurricane Center of where the storm could go. And one thing that we're noticing now it's starting to mirror what the American model and the European model are showing both have the storm slowing down and off the South Carolina coast and notice by eight o'clock, Tuesday to eight o'clock Wednesday, the storm doesn't move much. It goes from Savannah to Charleston. And so during that time period, heavy rain is going to fall perhaps some strong winds. And it's quite possible if it's a little farther offshore, it could be a hurricane. If it's a little farther inland, it could be a weaker storm. This is one to watch because the model suggests it could stall in this area for a few days and then lift up toward North Carolina. The European model actually carries it back to the west over land over South Carolina eventually ends up in Middle Tennessee. So definitely want to watch especially of interest down east of the coast. There could be hurricane conditions there at some point next week and even if it takes an inland route and comes up to our part of North Carolina, we could see some heavy rainfall. So again, this is definitely one to watch. That's our tropical update for this Friday night. Make sure you tune in over the weekend.
