WRAL Weather Alert Day: Brutal heat index could exceed 110 degrees, storms bring flood risk

<p>I'm meteorologist Chris Michaels in the WRL severe weather center new this morning, a weather alert day in effect and it's kind of two fold. We'll explain why. Uh, the first reason is excessive heat for the second straight day. We have excessive heat warnings for areas like Raleigh, Fayetteville, Goldsboro and Rocky Mount heat advisories for areas like Sanford, Siler City, Durham and Chapel Hill, regardless of where you go very hot today, similar to yesterday where the heat index gets to about 105 to 110 that be felt late this afternoon into the evening. And though you do see the chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, something you'll need to watch out for if you're heading to the Durham Bulls game this evening. And despite the fact that we're in a drought, there's a lot of moisture for these storms to work with. So you see the chance for localized flooding, especially in the yellow level two risk that's been posted by Noah's weather prediction center. Here's lunchtime and we're mostly dry, partly cloudy hazy, very hot, very humid out there. But as we press forward in time, you notice after two pm or so that's when storms will really start to get going. They'll start out west of the triangle and then move to the east after sunset. Chances go down for us. And then by midnight it's maybe a stray shower out there also in the tropics. We're keeping an eye on Beryl, which continues to get a little stronger here in the Gulf of Mexico. This will make landfall in Texas as a hurricane on Monday, remnant moisture from that storm likely makes it into our area. Now, we're not going to see the bulk of impacts. You see that especially toward Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas. It's also where the stronger wind is going to be through next week, but it does bring the chance for some rain. Latest projected uh forecast models showing about 1 to 3 inches of rain between now and Friday and also some relief from this excessive heat tomorrow. Looking at high temperatures in the mid topper eighties, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday in the lower nineties, still very sticky with the daily shot for scattered showers and storms.</p>
