Raleigh police arrested 23-year-old Andrew Graney, a senior at NC State, in connection to a series of shootings that occurred between Nov. 4 and 7, after using phone data and evidence linking him to the crime scenes.

All right. All right, Mister Greeny. Can you hear me? Ok? Yes, I can. You are here on the first appearance. You've been charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon intending to kill inflicting serious injury and then 123456789, 1011, 11 counts of discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling and removing vehicle. If convicted of any of these charges, you face the possibility of going to jail. You probably to be represented by an attorney. Are you going to hire your own attorney or would you like me to appoint one for you? Can you appoint one for me? Yes, sir. I'm gonna appoint the public defender office to represent you on this matter. Um, the next date is gonna be November 27th at 9 a.m. And the next thing I do is I'll, um, let the state and your, uh, and Mr Elmore be heard on bond, uh, if, if possible and any other release conditions. All right. You know, I'm not used to seeing you since you court. Yes, thank you. Your honor. Your honor is well aware, aware that you have the discretion under 15, a 533 B 12 to set a bond or not on these matters because the charges do include assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill like a serious injury. Um The state is asking in this case, uh for the kind of following reasons um that you keep, uh, Mr Gray in custody. Um While this investigation continues, um I know this matter is one that has been covered by the local media as your honor may be aware of some of these facts. But ultimately, what we're talking about here is seven instances of gunfire in which seven cars, three occupied residents were shot into one victim, stuck her gunshot wound to her leg as she drove her car down I 40 eastbound near Chapel Hill Road in Carytown Boulevard due to the incredible um extraordinary effort for the Raleigh Police Department and the City County Bureau of Identification. Mr Gray was identified and arrested yesterday by the Raleigh Police Department shell casings from many of these scenes most of them, if not all were recovered and there were 45 cal caliber shell casings, all of which were um, a preliminary knife and matched to each other, which your honor knows. And pending confirmation suggests that these were all fired from the same firearm. When Mr Gray was arrested yesterday, he was um in his residence in a neighborhood in West Raleigh and his vehicle was there on scene which is a vehicle that matches the description of the vehicle that um was used in at least some of these instances. And ultimately, inside that vehicle was a 45 caliber firearm um belong to Mr Grady um that was seen by the raw police department. Further cell phone tower information shows that Mr Gray's cell phone was in each and every one of these locations um during the time of the offenses. Um over this four day period, this was an absolutely um senseless and random um acts a series of acts of violence um that really put the community on edge. And the state feels strongly that despite the fact that he does not have a criminal history outside your honor, and he is by some indications enrolled as a student in the state that there is an issue here with danger, dangerousness to the public. And again, the only way to ensure public safety is to hold him in custody um without a bond at this time. While this investigation continues, police are still looking into what the motivations were in this particular case, we don't have any indications um at this time. But again, this investigation is continuing. So your honor due to the nation of certain stances as we know them uh so far and the the evidence, um I would ask that your honor consider keeping the no bond in place uh at this time at this early stage. Thank you, Mr Mr Elmore. Anything I say on behalf of Mr Brain just to reiterate, he is 23 years old. He's a senior NC state no record. Uh 1585, 33 B does allow you to set a bond, your order to set a bond and obviously, all right, thank you. Um This is one of those cases that put fear in the heart of the entire community. Uh um I had colleagues tell me technically, tell me, don't go on I 40 today, but I'm sure many other people in the community received that as well. I have the discretion to set a bond despite the fact that he doesn't have a criminal record and this went on for four days. I do think it's appropriate to exercise my discretion and not set any bond in this matter at this time. Mr Gray, it doesn't mean that at a future date, a judge won't find it appropriate to set a bond, but there needs to be a little bit more information. Um That would show that you wouldn't be a future danger to the public should you be allowed out on bond? So right now it's gonna be no bond. Thank you both. I put my name on before. So, um, have you all been ok? Oh um Mr Hang, hang on Mr Elmore, Mr Gray, that's it for the first appearance. Um, your attorney will be getting up with you as soon as he can. He's gonna come see you this afternoon. Thank you. Thank you.
