A WRAL Weather Alert Day has been issued for Sunday due to severe storms expected in the afternoon and evening.

WRAL Weather Alert Day: Level 2 risk for severe storms in Triangle

I'm meteorologist, Amy Weath in the WRL severe weather center, we've issued a weather alert day today due to the threat for severe storms. The storm should fire up around 1231 o'clock this afternoon and continue until around nine o'clock this evening. But we could have a secondary line of showers and storms move through after midnight. With the cold front itself, winds, heavy rain, that will be the main threat with the storms today. The entirety of North Carolina under some kind of risk for severe storms. The northern half of our area under a level two risk, the southern half under a level one risk for severe storms. Right now, the front still to the west of us with storms over the northern part of the North Carolina mountains, but the cold front will continue to approach the area. And as it gets closer, we'll have the chance for storms around 1230 or one o'clock is when we'll see these storms start to fire up and they'll continue through the afternoon into the evening. And then once we get to sunset just after sunset, we'll start to see the activity die down a little bit but then after midnight, another area of storms could move through with the cold front itself. This is 2 a.m. Some storms will be possible at 5 a.m. We'll have some storms over the southern half of the area and then by 7 a.m. the storms are moving away. We'll have clearing skies through the day on Monday and it will not be as hot. We'll have a little break in the heat starting Monday, but it is still very hot today. In fact, most of the area under a heat advisory, the heat index gets up to about 109 today, maybe even 110 in a few spots. The heat backs off Monday and Tuesday, which is great, but it starts to ramp back up for the middle part of the week. And then by Thursday, which is Fourth of July, we're back to dangerous heat 99 for the high a heat index near 108. So we'll probably have a heat advisory for the fourth of July. We'll have the storms today. We'll keep the weather office staffed with somebody keeping an eye on the radar for the entire day today. And then we'll have a little break in the heat Monday and Tuesday 91 Wednesday, 99 for the high fourth of July, we're up to 100 for the high on Friday and then next Saturday, still very hot highs in the upper nineties with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
