Voter turnout in the 25 counties under Helene-related disaster orders is higher than the state average, which itself is setting records for this point in a presidential election, the state's top election official said.

SHE SPOKE TO REPORTERS BY PHONE THIS MORNING ABOUT THE PROGRESS THAT'S BEING MADE WRAL'S PAUL SPENT WAS ON THAT PAUL, HOW ARE THINGS LOOKING WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA RIGHT NOW? >> WELL, DIRECTOR BELL SAID THE ELECTION INFRASTRUCTURE OUT IN THAT REGION IS HOLDING UP BETTER THAN THEY EXPECTED WITH EARLY VOTING. FOR INSTANCE, BELL SAID THEY WERE 80 SITES ORIGINALLY PLANNED AND COUNTY OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO OPEN 76 OF THEM. NOW FOR ELECTION DAY ITSELF. THE BOARD THOUGHT THEY MIGHT HAVE TO SET UP 15 TENTS FOR PEOPLE TO VOTE THAT NOW THEY THINK THE ONLY NEED 7 EXTRA TENSE TURNOUT. THAT'S ALSO LOOKING GOOD AND SURE.
