DESCRIPTION:
Byย Amanda Davis | Sr. Manager, CR and Environment
Toย be an environmentally responsible business, we need to focus onย reducingย greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our operations.ย Ourย operations includeย the buildings where our employees work,ย which use energy in the form of lighting, heatingย and cooling, andย toย power office equipment. We also haveย data centers that run on electricity, and employeesย thatย travel for work (following COVID-safeย travelย guidelines), all of which create GHG emissions.ย
In order to begin reducing our emissions,ย we needed to measureย our footprint.ย In FY20, we collaborated with our Workplace and IT teams to establish a GHG inventory. This important measurement process considered our energy use and associated emissions across our offices, data centers,โฏand from business travel.ย
Based onย thisย work,ย we established our GHG baselineย using FY21 dataย and expanded our inventory to include all relevantย Scope 3 emissions sources.ย Thisย baseline will help usย measure annual progressย and work toward setting science-based reduction targets.
How do we minimize GHG emissions?
As a consumer company offering mostly digitalย products, we have identified GHG reductionsย from data center and office energy use (Scopeย 2 emissions) and employee travel (Scope 3ย emissions) to be our most immediate priorities.ย
We are working with ourย Travelย teamย to add sustainability aspects and metrics into theย NortonLifeLockย Travel Policyย and are planning a series of employee communications to inform our workforce of the revised policy.ย Additionally, we plan to set emissions reduction goals for employee travel and for employee commuting (both part ofย ourย scope 3 emissionsย footprint).ย
Renewableย energyย isย also anย important part ofย reducingย global warmingย and in FY21, 21% of the electricity we used wasย fromย renewableย sources.ย We also recently joinedย CERES,ย a global network ofย investors, companies,ย and nonprofitsย drivingย sustainability, andย signedย on in supportย ofย a federal clean electricity standard.ย
Weย are pleased to have achieved aย 52% reduction inย Scope 1 and 2ย GHG emissions between FY20 and FY21.ย This was primarily driven byย a significant consolidation of our data centerย operations and a reduction in refrigerantย losses, and office closures in response to theย pandemic also contributed to the decrease.ย
Thank you for readingย aboutย ourย reimaginedย environmentalย stewardshipย strategy.ย Our final environmental pillar, โReporting,โ focuses on transparent disclosureย of our environmental performance. Weโre excited to announce our 2021 Environmental, Social, and Governance Report will launchย next week!ย
