American Kidney Fund Activates Disaster Relief Program to Provide Aid to Dialysis and Post-Transplant Patients Affected by Flooding in Washington State

ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 16, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Kidney Fund (AKF) hasย turned onย its Disaster Relief Program toย assistย dialysis and post-transplant patientsย living in areasย impactedย byย last weekโ€™s historic floodingย in Washington state.ย AKFโ€™s Disaster Relief Program is the only rapid-response systemย in the countryย that provides emergency financialย aidย to dialysis and recent transplant patients.ย ย

The catastrophic flooding hit western Washington last week,ย resulting in evacuation orders, highwayย closuresย and emergency rescues, along with aย federalย declaration of emergency.ย Evacuationย can beย very difficultย for people whoย need to receiveย dialysis treatments multiple times a week.ย ย ย

โ€œOur heartsย go out to all those affected byย theย disastrous flooding inย Washington,โ€ saidย LaVarneย A. Burton, AKF President and CEO.ย โ€œWhen dealing with aย dangerousย situation such as this,ย people should not have to worry about being able to access the care and medicines they need to survive; yet that isย the reality for people living with kidney failure in western Washingtonย withoutย aid.ย Thatโ€™sย why AKFย is stepping up to provideย vitalย assistanceย toย Washingtonย patients who have beenย impactedย by this disaster.ย We are here to help.โ€ย

Emergency grants ofย $250ย are available for dialysis and post-transplant patients living inย the following counties inย Washington:ย Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, King, Kittitas, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston,ย Wahkiakum,ย Whatcomย and Yakima.ย Disasterย relief grants help patients with low incomes replace lost medicines and kidney-friendly foods (which may be spoiled due to power outages), pay for temporary housing and transportation to treatment, and replace clothing and personal essentials lost due to the natural disaster or the need to evacuate with little to no notice.ย ย

People with kidney failure areย moreย likelyย toย experienceย hardshipsย during a natural disaster, as interruptions to dialysis treatments can put them at risk for being hospitalized.ย AKF has developed a resource page for patientsย impactedย by the floodsย in Washington, which can be accessedย here.ย ย

AKF has been providing emergency disaster financialย assistanceย to kidney patients throughout all the major disasters that have struck the United States and its territories for the past three decades.ย ย Dialysis and recent kidney transplant patients who need emergency financialย aidย should contact a social worker at their dialysis or transplant clinic for information on applying for aid or apply directly atย gms.KidneyFund.org.ย
