“For more than a decade, ESRT has made energy efficiency and healthy buildings a top priority. This NextGen certification recognizes our superior building performance which allows us to attract high-quality tenants who commit to energy reduction and subsequent cost savings,” said Dana Robbins Schneider, senior vice president, director of energy and sustainability at ESRT.

The Empire State Building, One Grand Central Place, 111 West 33rd Street, 501 Seventh Avenue, 1400 Broadway, 1350 Broadway, 298 Mulberry Street, and 345 East 94th Street are noted as more efficient than 90 percent of similar properties nationwide, thanks to the company’s groundbreaking deep energy retrofits with proven paybacks that reduced energy use by 51 percent at the Empire State Building and 41 percent across its commercial portfolio.

In partnership with ENERGY STAR, the Empire State Building will shine its world-famous tower lights in cyan on Saturday, Nov. 1 in celebration of the ENERGY STAR NextGen Certification.

ESRT received its initial recognition as ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in 2020 and has maintained the title each subsequent year. Through an industry-leading retrofit at the Empire State Building, ESRT reduced energy use and emissions at the building and subsequently published the ”Empire Building Playbook: An Owner’s Guide to Low Carbon Retrofits” – co-developed with NYSERDA and supported by other NYC-based landlords and the Clinton Global Initiative – to guide building owners in the steps to achieve carbon neutrality through emissions reduction with a proven return on investment.

ENERGY STAR is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thousands of organizations partner with ENERGY STAR – which includes nearly 40 percent of the Fortune 500 – to deliver cost-saving energy efficiency solutions that protect the environment, improve air quality, and protect public health. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped to avoid billions of metric tons of greenhouse emissions.
