Nachawati Law Group Supporting Kentucky AG in Lawsuit to Protect Children Using Popular Online Videogame Platform

Roblox is accused of enabling predatory outreach to young people, misleading parents regarding safety

Dallas-based Nachawati Law Group is working with Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman’s office in a lawsuit against Roblox, a massively popular interactive online gaming platform targeted at children and teens.

According to the company, as many as two-thirds of all children ages 9 to 12 in the United States are actively engaged in gaming through Roblox, and the company has repeatedly assured parents that the platform has strict safety and identity controls in place.

However, as alleged in Kentucky’s lawsuit, Roblox is “a hunting ground for child predators,” and that despite knowledge of those dangers, the company has failed to provide adequate warnings and safeguards to protect minors from child predators acting alone, as well as from international organizations dedicated to child sexual exploitation and self-harm.

“It is tragic that this company has willfully ignored the victimization of children to achieve and maintain financial success,” says firm founder Majed Nachawati. “Parents need to know this is happening, and Roblox needs to be held accountable. We will assist the Attorney General in any way possible in this litigation and are honored to play a role in this action.”

According to the lawsuit, children playing within the Roblox universe may find themselves in violent or sexual situations, including contact with strangers using third-party chat apps functioning as if they are part of the game, chats promoting violence or rape, and children’s avatars being subjected to violent sexual episodes.

“More than 30 million kids under 12 years of age are on that platform daily, many without parental supervision or even knowledge,” said Nachawati Law Group partner Brian McMath. “It’s difficult to imagine a scenario more attractive to potential online predators.”

The lawsuit notes that the company, which maintains a corporate headquarters in San Mateo, California, became publicly traded in 2021 with an initial valuation of $41 billion. Facing new expectations from investors, the suit adds, Roblox prioritized rapid growth in revenue and other metrics while deprioritizing safety measures. According to sources cited in the complaint, employees reported feeling explicit pressure to avoid changes that could reduce platform engagement, even when those changes would protect children from predators.

The lawsuit brings claims against Roblox and its affiliates for violations of the Kentucky Consumer Protection Act as well as unjust enrichment, negligence and failure to warn.

The case is Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. Roblox, Inc. and Roblox Prepaid Company LLC et al., cause no. 25-CI-00868 in the Commonwealth of Kentucky Madison Circuit Court.
