His career includes serving as a principal technical advisor to the Korean Educational Development Institute, where he played a key role in designing and revamping the Republic of South Korea's elementary, middle, and advanced school systems. Sands's family also has deep roots in education and botany; his father, Ernest Sands, was encouraged by the renowned Dr. David Fairchild to study botany, which led to the creation of the Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami.
