He obtained his bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Missouri and graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Before joining the army, Berryman worked as a veterinarian and earned his master's degree in Public Health and Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota. He has two years studying pathology and worked as an epidemiologist at a state-level health department.
