Production Creative Is Turning From a Project Cost Into a Software Workflow

For decades, commercial creative production followed project economics.

A company approved a brief, hired specialists, allocated production budget, created the asset and distributed the finished work.

Every additional campaign, format or variation restarted part of that process.

Generative AI is beginning to alter the cost structure.

The important change is not simply that individual images or videos can be produced more cheaply. It is that research, ideation, asset creation and iteration can increasingly operate as a continuous software workflow.

Fiverr’s Fall 2025 Business Trends Index found that searches for AI video creators rose 66% over six months. In the United States specifically, searches for AI-video creators rose 72%. Adobe’s 2026 Creators’ Toolkit Report meanwhile found 75% of creators who use or have tried creative AI consider it integrated or essential to their workflow.

Software products are responding by moving from point solutions toward the AI creative studio model. Clico, for example, combines deep research, images, writing and video inside a shared workspace so a campaign can progress between media types without repeatedly reconstructing its context.

Its AI video generator is economically interesting for the same reason. Video becomes less of a separate production event and more of an output that can emerge from an existing image, reference, concept or conversation.

Variable production costs begin to fall

Traditional content creation carries obvious marginal costs.

Another video may require another edit.

Another market requires another version.

A new format creates another production request.

Generative systems reduce some of those marginal costs because the underlying creative context can be reused.

Once a team establishes the product reference, campaign proposition and visual direction, producing a variation can become a software operation rather than a new mini-project.

This does not make production free.

Models have compute costs. Employees still spend time reviewing outputs. Brand and legal teams still need oversight. High-end productions will continue to use professional crews where physical control and precision justify the investment.

But the threshold for testing an idea falls significantly.

The ROI may come from discarded ideas

This is one of the less discussed economic consequences of generative production.

Companies traditionally evaluated creative partly through the cost of what they published.

AI makes it feasible to create material specifically to reject it.

A marketing team might generate five visual directions before selecting one.

A product team might test several short videos internally.

An agency might show a client working motion concepts instead of static storyboards.

The rejected outputs are not necessarily waste. They are inexpensive information.

This changes the economics of experimentation.

Human creative work moves toward allocation decisions

Fiverr’s data also shows why “AI replaces creatives” is an incomplete investment thesis.

The same index that recorded higher demand for AI capabilities also showed rising demand for platform-specific marketing, editing and storytelling skills.

Adobe’s 2026 survey found 85% of creators believe final creative decisions should remain under human control.

As generative supply rises, companies still have to allocate attention and budget.

Which concept gets media spend?

Which version represents the brand?

Which output contains an error?

Where should a campaign be adapted rather than duplicated?

These are judgment problems.

Creative infrastructure is becoming strategic software

Businesses have already seen similar transformations elsewhere.

Customer relationship management became software.

Accounting became software.

Commerce infrastructure became software.

Parts of creative production are now following the same path.

That does not mean agencies, studios or filmmakers disappear any more than accounting software eliminated accountants.

It changes where specialized labor creates the most value.

Routine production can move downward in cost while direction, differentiation and judgment move upward in importance.

For businesses, the most meaningful metric may eventually be neither “cost per asset” nor “number of AI generations.”

It may be the number of credible creative ideas a team can test before committing its next dollar of distribution.
