GLENDALE, CA, January 24, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation and My Footprints LA proudly announce the Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk to raise awareness and support for individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease (SCD). The event will take place February 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM PST at Pelona Vista Park, 37720 Tierra Subida Ave, Palmdale, CA 93551.
The event promises to be a vibrant and educational day for the whole family, featuring:
- 5K Walk to promote awareness and solidarity.
- Blood Drive to support individuals living with SCD.
- Face Painting, Bounce House, Vendors, Food Trucks, and a DJ for entertainment and engagement.
In partnership with the American Red Cross, we're hosting a life-saving blood drive to support those affected by sickle cell disease. Your donation can make a difference in the lives of patients who rely on these crucial blood donations. Walk for a cause, enjoy family-friendly activities, and help raise awareness about sickle cell disease. To schedule your blood donation, please visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter SCAFD to schedule an appointment. Donors are asked to arrive between 8 am and 2 pm. Blood donors will also be eligible to receive a $20 Gift Card by email from our friends at Amazon.
Admission for participation in the Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk is $35 per participant, and donations are welcomed. All proceeds will support efforts to improve resources, education, and care for individuals living with SCD.
Understanding Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease is a life-threatening genetic disorder affecting red blood cells, causing them to assume a sickle shape. This condition primarily affects African American and Hispanic-American populations and can lead to severe complications, including chronic pain, organ damage, and increased risk of infections.
Research and healthcare advancements for SCD have been historically underfunded, partly due to systemic inequities such as structural racism and implicit bias. Events like the Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk aim to address this disparity by raising awareness and fostering community action.
