Man Files Complaint with Federal Trade Commission to Investigate Walden University Business Practices

Walden University employed tactics to deceive students.

WASHINGTON, DC, June 26, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Terrance Alton Cox, III, the devoted father suing Walden University for $300 million for discrimination, and the man responsible for the American Standard Motorsports Award at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Host of The Real State Of Black America! Your Voice of the Nation, and organizer of the Minority Youth Matters Movement, has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report # 188816953, against Walden University for unfair, corrupt, and discriminatory business practices. Cox alleges that Walden University's discriminatory practices violate the FTC's standards for ethical business conduct. The complaint asserts that the university misled students through deceptive marketing, misrepresentation of academic requirements, and discriminatory policies that disproportionately impacted minority (Black and female students) and other vulnerable populations. According to a class-action lawsuit that Walden settled, they employed tactics to deceive students, hiding the true cost by understating the number of required credits and delaying the completion of required capstone projects, leading to increased tuition costs and prolonged time to graduation.

Cox submitted his complaint to the FTC because "these practices not only defrauded students financially but also undermined their educational and professional advancement, causing deeper economic hardship." He argues that "Walden's actions constitute a pattern of behavior that is counter to the FTC's mandate to protect consumers from deceptive and unfair business practices." The complaint emphasizes the broader implications for consumer protection in higher education, highlighting the need for increased oversight of for-profit institutions. The Department of Education decided to forgive $6 billion in debt to students who claimed they were misled by schools owned by Adtalem Global Education.

Walden University has previously faced scrutiny over its recruitment and retention tactics, but Cox's filing brings renewed attention to the institution's business practices. The outcome of this complaint could set a precedent for how federal regulators address similar allegations in the for-profit education sector.

The Manchester Report will continue to monitor developments in the case and will update you about any potential actions against the university.
