Former Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart publishes new book about decriminalizing drugs in British Columbia

Los Angeles/Vancouver - Former Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart has published an insider’s account chronicling the struggles to decriminalize hard drugs in British Columbia entitled Decrim: How We Decriminalized Drugs in British Columbia.

As mayor of Vancouver between 2018 and 2022, Stewart was on the front lines of a toxic drug crisis which has killed almost 10,000 British Columbians since 2016. A former Member of Parliament, mayor, and now professor of public policy, Dr. Stewart worked with others to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of hard drugs which came into effect in British Columbia on January 31, 2023.

The book offers a gripping account of this transformative policy shift, combining personal stories and data to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by those who championed this policy change. It also delves into the heartbreaking details of the lives and deaths of drug users, shedding light on the realities of Canada's Indigenous Genocide, poverty, and homelessness.

Dr. Stewart explains past drug policy reform efforts in Vancouver, how the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the illicit drug-related death crisis, and the pivotal role played by key political figures - including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointing Patty Hajdu as Minister of Health. The book offers a comprehensive look at the process by which decriminalization was achieved as well as the risks involved for those advocating for change.
