San Francisco-based adventurer turned writer diRk Williams has announced the upcoming release of his new book, Cock Tales & Other Bull, on his social media platforms. The book is darkly comic, urban-fantasy satire that skewers the modern world through the lens of magic, monsters, and corporate absurdity.
In Cock Tales & Other Bull, Williams invites readers into a genre where a mall security guard, Declan, one of the book’s hapless protagonists, just wanted a steady paycheck, not a job trying to deduce which child was stolen by Mall entertainment. The result is a world where the supernatural meets the soul-crushingly mundane, and fantasy tropes collide with corporate culture in hilarious, often unsettling ways.
Cock Tales & Other Bull is a collection of stories where readers won’t find any standard heroes; these are about the ones working with them: The career adventurers. Williams’ biting humor and sharp social commentary shine through as he satirizes a civilization where The Blood God has a chain of barbecue restaurants. Fiction, especially fantasy is a funhouse mirror where the distortions are used to bring the readers’ focus to parts of life we either take for granted or don’t want to acknowledge.
“Cock Tales & Other Bull is a reflection of our own world’s chaos,” says Williams. “I wanted to write something that laughs at the idea that order and meaning can exist in systems that are fundamentally ridiculous. It’s about people trying to hold it together while the universe keeps filing the wrong paperwork.”
When asked about his inspiration, Williams explained:
“My friend badgered me into submitting a story for a pulp magazine that paid $50 per story, saying, “You’ve done far worse for fifty dollars.” Three rejections later, he pointed out a couple more, and I’d have a book. I started writing these stories, but the more I wrote, the more I remembered the Oscar Wilde quote, “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh. Otherwise they’ll kill you.” It’s a mix of everything I love: absurd humor, urban fantasy with a side eye, and the everyday grind of trying to survive a world that doesn’t make sense.”
