Charlotte, NC - Vermanno Bowman today officially launches his campaign to represent North Carolina House District 106, bringing a fresh, bold, and progressive voice to the General Assembly. Born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Vermanno grew up in a large family and experienced firsthand the challenges of poverty, moving frequently, living with extended family, and watching his young mother work minimum wage jobs while his father worked long hours in a manufacturing plant. He graduated from West Charlotte High School in 2017 and later enlisted in the North Carolina Army National Guard as a Military Police officer. His military service has included responding to domestic emergencies and public safety deployments, experiences that shaped his sense of duty and strengthened his commitment to serve his community.
Vermanno Bowman has been active in North Carolina politics for several years, consistently challenging the status quo and offering voters a bold, progressive alternative. In 2022, he ran in the Democratic primary for House District 107, earning a notable share of the vote as a newcomer against an established incumbent. Two years later, in 2024, he again stepped up in the Democratic primary for House District 106, taking on long-time representative Carla Cunningham and winning strong grassroots support. While he did not prevail in either contest, his persistence and willingness to stand up to entrenched power reflect his determination to give communities a voice and to keep progressive issues on the ballot.
Bowman’s reputation as a progressive champion comes from both his platform and his advocacy. He has been active in grassroots organizing and served on the State Executive Committee of the North Carolina Democratic Party, helping to build power from the ground up. His campaign priorities include universal healthcare, aggressive climate action, affordable housing, term limits, and fully funded public education, aligning him with the values of progressives across the country. He has also built credibility by speaking out when incumbents have failed their constituents, making accountability a central theme of his political work.
