As the New York Society of Women Artists approaches its 100th year, the organization reflects vast diversity in the backgrounds and experiences of its artists similar to those of its founding mavericks.

Though inhabiting a very different contemporary world, the present day multigenerational, multiethnic society still finds itself championing causes and concerns comparable to those of its 1920's Suffragette predecessors. The artworks presented in Evolution/Revolution relate to the experience of each artist as advocate, singularly and collectively, in a quest for equality in a society in which the triumphs obtained today are constantly at risk of being lost tomorrow.

This exhibition has been curated by Nitza TufiƱo and reflect the voices of 45 artists in two- and three-dimensional works. Evolution/Revolution is now on view through September 16th at Taller Boricua, 1680 Lexington Avenue, New York City. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 12pm to 6pm.

The exhibit illustrates the power of art to underscore the following statement, framed by the question: "Are equalities earned once and for all, or will the continuous erosion of rights obtained require constant vigilance and fortification?"

This exhibition is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the office of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. It is also supported in part by public funds from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council, Consejo Grafico, and the Puerto Rican Workshop Inc.

Exhibition on view through September 16th, Wednesdays through Saturdays 12pm to 6pm

ABOUT:
The New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) was founded in 1925 when twenty-three painters and three sculptors banded together to form this group of passionate feminists and talented artists. From its inception, NYSWA was devoted to promoting avant-garde women artists by arranging shows of their work and raising the status of female artists.

With New York City serving as the cultural gateway in the 1920's. The social and political climate of America was fertile territory for women artists to unite to express their avowed role in society: to demand freedom and recognition parallel to the Women's Suffragette Movement which had gained much ground. By uniting as a Society, NYSWA's founding women artists gained support and increased exhibition opportunities.

NYSWA persists in strength as it nears its centennial and reflects the voices of its inter-generational, multi-ethnic members. The organization has nearly tripled in size and limits itself by charter to 60 active members-who continue to garner acclaim as they prevail with fortitude, making art in solidarity. Today the conversation has shifted to gender fluidity and bodily autonomy as NYSWA continues to question female gender stereotypes, as they relate to perceived societal norms for women. Through their artwork, NYSWA members embrace the many facets of their own humanity, their self- perceptions, and continue to fight to gain parity in the art world and art market.
