Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Continue to Expand, New Report Shows

Several Safety Features Topped 90% Market Penetration by 2023 Model Year

The Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety (PARTS) has released an updated report detailing the expanded deployment of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in passenger vehicles.

PARTS—a partnership between automobile manufacturers and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—was established in 2018 to advance traffic safety through collaborative analysis of automotive safety technologies.

This latest PARTS report shows that by the 2023 model year, 10 out of 14 ADAS features had surpassed 50% market penetration, with five features exceeding 90% penetration. In contrast, none of the ADAS features had exceeded 75% penetration in PARTS’s 2021 report.

Key findings from the updated report indicate that forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking (AEB), pedestrian detection warning, pedestrian AEB, and lane departure warning have achieved the highest levels of U.S. market penetration, ranging from 91% to 94%. Additionally, lane keeping assistance, automatic high beam, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane centering assistance have also demonstrated significant U.S. market penetration, each exceeding 50% equipment in new vehicles.

These findings were based on data from approximately 98 million passenger vehicles sold in the United States, covering 168 different models from model years 2015–2023, produced by nine automobile manufacturers. This data set represents more than double the number of passenger vehicles sold and an increase of 75 models compared to the previous report.

The not-for-profit MITRE Corporation operates PARTS as an independent third party. MITRE compiled ADAS market penetration rates in direct collaboration with PARTS partners. The automakers that provided vehicle equipment data include Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Stellantis, Subaru, and Toyota. These partners collectively account for approximately 80% of the U.S. passenger vehicle market.

This report underscores the rapid, voluntary integration of ADAS features in new vehicles, highlighting the industry’s commitment to advanced vehicle safety. PARTS will continue to provide real-world insights into the safety benefits and opportunities of emerging advanced driver assistance systems.

"These results underscore the tremendous efforts of automakers, in close collaboration with government partners, to double down on safety. Automakers are rapidly and voluntarily embracing a wide array of advanced safety technologies to achieve our shared objective of reducing roadway fatalities," said David Liu, manager, Regulatory Safety Affairs at American Honda Motor Company, Inc, and PARTS industry co-chair.

“Integrating proven safety technologies in more vehicles can help prevent crashes, reduce injuries, and save lives inside and outside vehicles,” said Sophie Shulman, NHTSA’s deputy administrator. “Vehicle technology is a critical part of the USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy, and NHTSA encourages all vehicle owners to learn more about the safety technologies in their vehicles.”

“Working collaboratively with automakers and NHTSA, PARTS is an innovative partnership with a universal goal: improving vehicle safety to save lives,” said Kerry Buckley, vice president of MITRE’s Center for Integrated Transportation.
