Ecological Practice of Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind: The Establishment of the International Mangrove Center

By: Get News

Recently, 2024, in Shenzhen, representatives from the first batch of 18 member countries jointly signed the establishment agreement of the International Mangrove Center. This is not only a signed document but also a commitment by all member countries to the vision of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and a concrete action to jointly seek ecological well-being for humanity.

Mangroves play an extremely important role in maintaining biodiversity, mitigating and adapting to climate change, disaster prevention and mitigation, and achieving sustainable development. Currently, the situation of global mangrove conservation remains severe, and international collaborative actions are crucial for strengthening mangrove conservation. China will take the International Mangrove Center as a platform and shoulder the mission of contributing Chinese strength and promoting global joint actions for mangrove conservation.

China is an important participant, contributor, and leader in global ecological civilization construction, and has achieved remarkable results in mangrove conservation. Since the beginning of this century, the area of mangroves in China has increased by nearly 38%, making it one of the few countries in the world with a net increase in mangrove area. From Xiamen Yundang Lake to Shenzhen Futian, from Zhanjiang Jinniudao to Beihai Jinhai Bay and Haikou Dongzhaigang, various regions have explored conservation models based on local conditions, contributing successful Chinese solutions for mangrove conservation to the world. Over the past two years, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and Shenzhen City have continuously deepened their understanding and respect for this precious natural resource, and have been fully committed to advancing the construction tasks of the International Mangrove Center with a strong sense of political responsibility and mission. They have jointly held high-level forums, international symposiums, training courses, and conducted mutual visits and exchanges, comprehensively strengthening international cooperation, building consensus, and seeking wide recognition and support.

In May and July 2023, the International Symposium on Mangrove Conservation Cooperation and the International High-level Forum on Mangrove Conservation were successively held in Shenzhen, with representatives from 32 and 29 countries respectively participating. The participating countries and China reached a preliminary consensus on the construction of the International Mangrove Center, established a support and liaison mechanism, and formed a "Friends of the International Mangrove Center" group consisting of 27 countries, and adopted the "Joint Declaration" in support of the construction of the International Mangrove Center. In July and November 2024, two international training courses on mangrove conservation and restoration were held in Shenzhen, with 20 and 15 countries respectively participating, promoting the exchange and sharing of knowledge and cases on mangrove conservation and restoration. In October 2024, Shenzhen sent two delegations to visit and exchange in Madagascar, Mozambique, Cambodia, and Thailand, discussing the signing of the establishment agreement and promoting the implementation of international cooperation projects. During the visits, the International Mangrove Center signed the "Cooperation Agreement on Mangrove Protection and Restoration Capacity Building Project" with relevant departments in Madagascar and Cambodia respectively, officially launching the first batch of international cooperation and exchange pilot projects.

The International Mangrove Center is an independent and non-profit intergovernmental international institution, an open and inclusive international cooperation mechanism that is mutually beneficial and open to contracting parties of the Ramsar Convention and other non-contracting parties with mangrove distribution. The International Mangrove Center aims to build consensus, promote the formulation of global mangrove collaborative conservation strategies and action plans; carry out mangrove conservation n education and popular science publicity; deepen cooperation, fully mobilize the enthusiasm and initiative of experts and scholars from all countries, and jointly promote scientific research, monitoring and assessment, personnel training, and case demonstration, share important information and advanced experience, and drive the innovation of mangrove conservation models and paths; carry out cooperation and exchanges at the legal, institutional, and rule levels, and strive to enhance the level of global mangrove collaborative governance, and jointly create a new era of global mangrove conservation.
