"To Kill a Cockroach" Sheds Light on Immigration, Identity, and Survival
Osvaldo Calixto Amador’s debut memoir, “To Kill a Cockroach,” is a gripping and deeply personal narrative that explores themes of exile, identity, and resilience. Lauded by Kirkus Reviews as an “affecting memoir about isolation and belonging,” Amador’s story offers a poignant and unflinching reflection on the power of art, healing, and self-discovery.

To Kill a Cockroach, the International Impact Book Award-winning memoir by Osvaldo Calixto Amador, takes readers on an extraordinary journey through the complexities of immigration, survival, and personal transformation. Inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird, Amador’s book confronts the ongoing presence of racism and prejudice in contemporary society, much like Harper Lee’s portrayal of injustice in Maycomb, Alabama.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1965, Amador fled to the United States as an infant on the last Freedom Flight, leaving behind a father imprisoned as a political dissident. His childhood in Miami was marked by instability, hardship, and the struggle of self-acceptance. Battling family turmoil and societal rejection, Amador found solace in art and literature, eventually channeling his experiences into a memoir that transcends the personal to explore larger historical narratives. His work examines the Cuban Revolution, the trauma of immigration, and the profound losses suffered during the AIDS crisis, where Amador lost 23 close friends in the early 1980s.

Kirkus Reviews praises To Kill a Cockroach as “a sincere and quite funny” account that “digs into feelings with fearlessness and grace.” Through evocative storytelling, Amador delivers a compelling message about perseverance, healing, and the universal search for belonging. His journey from an exiled child to a successful artist and writer serves as a testament to the transformative power of creativity in the face of adversity.

Immerse yourself in a memoir that sheds light on immigration, loss, and the transformative power of art. Don’t miss your chance to experience this compelling journey, order your copy today on Amazon or Barnes & Noble and be inspired by a story that speaks to the heart of the human experience.
