James Brady Washburn Calls for Smarter, Slower Rollouts in Healthcare Technology

Franklin, Tennessee healthcare CEO urges leaders to align technology adoption with staff training for better patient outcomes

Franklin, TN - September 15, 2025 - James Brady Washburn, CEO of Mid South Wound LLC and former Division I athlete, is using his platform to highlight an often-overlooked challenge in healthcare: the rush to implement new technology without giving staff enough time to adapt.

“Rollout speed should never outpace learning speed,” Washburn says in “An Interview with Franklin, Tennessee’s James Brady Washburn.” “If your team isn’t ready, even the best technology will underperform—and in healthcare, that can directly impact patient care.”

A 2023 HealthTech survey found that 62% of healthcare leaders felt pressured to adopt new technology faster than their teams could realistically integrate it. This rush often results in up to 40% more user errors during the first 90 days of implementation, according to the Journal of Medical Systems. Washburn warns that in wound care, where precise tracking and timely intervention are critical, those errors can mean delayed healing or unnecessary complications.

A Coach’s Approach to Technology Adoption Washburn draws on his athletic background to explain his philosophy. “In sports, you don’t throw an entire playbook at a rookie on day one. You give them core plays, let them master those, then build from there. It should be the same with technology in healthcare.”

He encourages organizations to break implementations into smaller phases, build confidence at each step, and create space for ongoing feedback.

What People Can Do Now Washburn believes the responsibility isn’t just on executives. “Whether you’re a department lead, a nurse, or a tech, speak up when you need more training,” he says. “Ask for hands-on practice before going live. The goal isn’t to meet a deadline—it’s to improve patient care.”

Why It Matters Beyond Healthcare The problem isn’t limited to hospitals. The same dynamic plays out in schools, small businesses, and community organizations adopting new tools. McKinsey research shows that projects with well-paced rollouts are 70% more likely to hit performance targets than those with rushed timelines.

Call to Action Washburn urges professionals in all industries to take an honest look at their own implementation timelines. “Ask yourself: Are we more focused on getting it done fast, or getting it done right?” he says. “Your answer will determine your results.”
