India Launches Global Biofuel Alliance at G20 Summit to Speed Up Net Zero Targets, Reports Geeky News

By: IssueWire

Surrey, United Kingdom Oct 25, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - India, a global leader in clean energy initiatives, has taken a momentous step towards achieving its Net Zero goals. It launched the Global Biofuel Alliance at the recent G20 summit in New Delhi. This groundbreaking initiative, with the United States and Brazil as co-signatories, aims to promote the adoption of clean energy through biofuels on a global scale. By fostering international cooperation and trade in biomass-derived biofuels, the alliance is committed to advancing Net Zero targets.

The Global Biofuel Alliance comprises 19 nations and is supported by 12 international institutions, including the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the Asian Development Bank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the leaders of the G20 major economies, invited all participating nations to join this transformative alliance.

Prime Minister Modi stated, "We are launching the Global Biofuel Alliance. India invites all of you to join this initiative."

The formation of this alliance mirrors India's leadership in the clean energy sector, exemplified by the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which was launched in 2015 to promote the mass deployment of affordable and clean solar energy to combat climate change.

Biofuels play a vital role in enabling the global transportation sector to meet low-sulfur regulations and achieve long-term decarbonisation.

Research indicates that biodiesel (B100) has the potential to reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by a substantial 78.45% compared to petroleum diesel. Even a modest blending of biofuels, such as B20, can lead to a 15.66% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from metropolitan buses. Despite these promising statistics, the adoption of biofuels in the transportation industry has been slow, accounting for only 4% of total global transport energy demand in 2022.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), in its report titled "Biofuel Policy in Brazil, India, and the United States - Insights for the Global Biofuel Alliance," has stressed the urgent need to triple biofuel production by 2030 to align with the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2050. India is taking the lead by increasing its biofuel production capacity, with the goal of achieving NZE by 2027.

At the core of India's clean energy strategy is the widespread use of biofuels in the transportation sector. To underscore this commitment, the Indian government has advanced its target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in gasoline from 2030 to 2025-26. This ambitious goal will require a production capacity of approximately 14.5 billion litres per year. The Global Alliance on Biofuels will help increase ethanol production and promote international trade of biofuels.

As the world's third-largest oil consumer and importer, India relies on imports for approximately 85% of its total crude oil needs. The establishment of the Global Biofuel Alliance is a significant step towards India's Net Zero goals. However, it is also vital to address the challenges facing the biofuel industry.

One such challenge is the increasing bio-content in biodiesel. That can lead to microbial contamination, resulting in costly engine repairs and operational disruptions. Experts recommend periodic fuel testing with advanced kits, such as FUELSTAT by Conidia Bioscience. These can help prevent contamination and ensure the success of the biofuel industry.

In alignment with India's commitment to clean energy, the country has outlined plans to construct 12 bio-refineries. These will use biomass sources like plant waste, crop stubble, and municipal solid waste to produce biofuels. This will help create a more sustainable energy landscape.

The Global Biofuel Alliance's launch is a crucial step towards achieving global Net Zero emissions and promoting clean energy. India welcomes the world to join hands and accelerate the transition to a greener and more sustainable future.
