Importance of Alcohol and Drug Education for Student Drivers Emphasized at Regional Conference

More than 150 driver’s education teachers were trained in how to best teach students the dangers of specific drugs and alcohol

-- The Southeast Region American Driver &Traffic Safety Education Association met recently in Williamsburg, Virginia, and spent three days discussing techniques to best teach safety to student drivers. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World was a sponsor of the conference and provided educational materials on many different types of drugs, including alcohol, to teachers and educators attending the conference.

The majority of driving fatalities are drug and/or alcohol-related. The National Center for Statistics and Analysis’ most recent statistics available (2022) show that 32% of traffic fatalities were alcohol-related. The same center found that 52% of those who died in traffic accidents tested positive for drugs in their systems.

Darren Tessitore of Foundation for a Drug-Free World provided free information booklets to educate new drivers about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Many driver’s education programs emphasize the dangers of drunk driving while ignoring the dangers of driving under the influence of other drugs. Foundation for a Drug-Free World hopes to correct that trend with booklets and videos that show the adverse effects of many different drugs. Almost all illegal drugs and many legal drugs affect reaction time and alertness. Numerous medications have warning labels against driving while taking them.

Mr. Tessitore said, “It has been found that proper education on the dangers of drugs can help save youth’s lives. Our mission is to make sure all kids are educated on what drugs are and what they do.” Tessitore has been educating others on drugs for 17 years using the Drug-Free World materials.  He is currently working on a program to train 250,000 teachers across Europe, in an effort to save more lives.
