In 1980 William Jamison opened Folk Craft Gallery in downtown Portland, OR. In 1983 Jeffrey Thomas took a job there and in 1985 the two began their close professional partnership changing Folk Craft Gallery into Jamison/Thomas Gallery. It was an interesting collaboration from the start, formed by two very different but passionate art enthusiasts. Jeffrey Thomas was from a family of contemporary art curators and collectors in New York City. William Jamison was raised in a small community in Ohio, had an art/teaching degree from Kent State and had taught studio art. They each had an eye for outstanding artists, and a keen understanding and ability to work with artists and collectors. In August 1986, with Jamison holding down the Portland location, Thomas moved to New York City to open a second location.

In 1995 Jamison passed away after running his gallery for 15 years, Thomas moved to the creative services industry and the Jamison/Thomas Gallery closed for good. However, the two directors of the Jamison/Thomas Gallery in Portland, Charles Froelick and Jane Beebe, went on to open their respective galleries and carry the torch to this day. Brad Rogers, a PNCA graduate and Jamison’s surviving life partner opened his own gallery, and is still curating exhibitions of artists he champions. The Jamison/Thomas legacy has had a direct influence in the arts culture of Portland for over forty years!
