A native of China who immigrated to the United States at age eight, he began with just a single English word, “orange,” yet quickly surged academically to eventually graduate at the top of his class from Oberlin College. His passion for social justice spurred him to law school at Santa Clara University, where he won accolades including Best Oral Advocate, the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Scholarship, and an externship at the Superior Court of San Francisco.

Tong’s early commitment to service also led him to important roles in nonprofit and legal support communities—fundraising for fair housing, consumer protection campaigns, and contributing graphic design for advocacy projects. He carried this devotion into his legal career, volunteering at Legal Aid at Work’s Workers Rights Clinic, and serving on the boards of the California Employment Lawyers Association and the Alameda County Bar Association, where he became Board President in 2021.
