Aquaculture, the controlled cultivation of fish and other aquatic creatures as opposed to commercial sea fishing, is currently estimated to be worth $191.3 billion globally. Over 3 billion people rely on fish as a healthy protein source, and they are turning to aquaculture as a more dependable and sustainable solution.

Commercial overfishing has led to ocean pollution and ecosystem degradation. Plus, continuing supply chain concerns are pushing providers to look for local solutions. Though the U.S. still imports up to 85% of its seafood, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) wants to expand America’s aquaculture capabilities and make the U.S. a leader in aquaculture production. This is creating market opportunities for companies developing aquaculture and recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) solutions.

A Quick Look At Companies Investing In Fish Farms

Taiwan-based Nocera Inc. (NASDAQ: NCRA) acquired a 229-acre agricultural property for a fish farm in Alabama, as part of its expansion into US aquaculture. Nocera, a RAS production and consulting company, has seen a series of successes in the US aquaculture market.

As well as listing on the NASDAQ last year, Nocera CEO and president Jeff Cheng revealed Nocera may potentially build one of the U.S.’s largest fish farms in Georgia. The company also saw record monthly revenue in November.

“We are committed to raise green and sustainable fish for the market and look forward to continued execution of our fish farm construction in the months ahead,” said Cheng. “We will continue to invest and expand in a green and sustainable way in the United States and globally, ”

Other RAS aquaculture companies include AquaBounty Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: AQB), which is constructing an Atlantic salmon farm in Ohio, and Blue Star Foods Corp. (NASDAQ: BSFC).

These companies are working in tandem with USDA Prioritizations for expanding domestic fishing solutions.

Nocera, Inc. is an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company that designs, builds, and installs equipment for the fish farming industry, as well as provides technical assistance to fish farm operations. Our Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (“RAS”) help preserve the environment by reducing pollution from over concentration of fish as often occurs in fish farms based in natural inland waterways or bodies. Nocera’s RAS tanks can produce 20,000 – 30,000 lbs. of fish annually.
