National Safety Month and the Importance of Effective Safety Programs to Protect Workers

By: WebWire

Since 1996, the month of June has been recognized as National Safety Month. The National Safety Council established the month-long observance as a time for organizations, companies, and individuals to increase awareness of workplace safety and health risks and to make efforts to reduce occupational injuries and deaths.

This effort is important as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports there were 4,764 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States, with a worker dying every 111 minutes as recently as 2020. That same year, according to BLS, private employers reported 2.7 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses. This number included 1,176,340 nonfatal injuries and illnesses that caused a private industry worker to miss at least one day of work.

“Employers are responsible for providing a safe workplace under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “Not only is it the right thing to do, safe work environments also make financial sense. OSHA estimates that employers pay almost $1 billion per week for direct workers' compensation costs alone. Add in the indirect costs and this figure grows significantly. These are all reasons CTSI supports the efforts of National Safety Month.”

With offices in New York and Florida, CTSI helps businesses and institutions with their environmental, health, and safety (EHS) efforts. Staffed with an expert team, CTSI's safety professionals have assessed thousands of workplaces to provide solutions to improve safety and mitigate risks in accordance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations. They offer comprehensive facility-wide safety and health programs, community right-to-know program support in NYC, regulatory compliance assessments and management training, safety training, and many other EHS and industrial hygiene services.

CTSI also recently sponsored an educational video about National Safety Month that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/ygdLjYfG8z0
