Wednesday is now our third WRAL Weather Alert Day this week. There's a Level 1 risk for severe storms in the afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and localized flooding are possible.

WRAL Weather Alert Day: Localized flooding, severe storms expected again Wednesday

I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilmeth in the WRL severe weather center. It's the third day in a row that we've issued a weather alert day. We have the potential for flooding again and we have the risk for severe storms, a flood watch in effect for the entire area through Thursday. We're expecting more rounds of heavy rain, so localized flooding, certainly possible over the next couple of days. And we also have a level one risk for severe storms from Wake County and points to the north. The biggest threat will be some damaging wind gusts. So let's talk about the timing. We do expect these storms be with us during the evening, commute, not everywhere, but we will have scattered showers and storms during the evening commute, similar to what we've had the last several days. So four o'clock this afternoon, tune to Wrl Mike and Kat will have the latest on the warnings that are issued for the area and a latest look at the radar as well. 530 we'll have the potential for showers and storms with some heavy downpours and gusty winds that continues through the evening and into the nighttime hours if some of you were woken up by the loud thunder last night. You might want to go ahead and prepare for that again tonight. It does look like some of these storms are going to linger into the overnight hours and we'll have more rounds of rain and storms on Thursday as well. We might issue a weather alert day for Thursday waiting to look at the afternoon model data and we'll make that decision late this afternoon. We have had a lot of rain over the last week. This is a look at how much rain we've had in the areas in yellow, anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of rain. Many locations, 1 to 3 inches, maybe even four and five inches. So we've had some heavy rainfall totals of ground already really saturated and we expect an additional one to maybe three inches of rain through Friday. So again, we do expect the potential for some flooding in the days ahead today tomorrow and Friday and then we can be done with this. The weather improves tremendously by the time we get to the weekend. But a medium risk for flooding for the next few days before that drier air arrives for the upcoming weekend. It's going to be pretty hot today. 91 for the high temperature with those scattered showers and storms and then temperatures back off big time, Thursday and Friday highs in the low eighties. But that does come with a lot of rain and storms and then Saturday and Sunday. Not bad. We took rain out of the forecast. We'll have sunshine, lower humidity with high temperatures in the upper eighties.
