DESCRIPTION:
Ourย Meet the Hiring Managerย series allows you to get to know the people who grow teams atย VMware. Youโll learn about our hiring managersโ career paths and what they look for in candidates during the interview process. This week weโd like you to meetย Bill de Dufour.
VMware Careers: Bill, tell us how your career journey in Tech started?
Bill De Dufour:ย My career journey beganย as a Pre-Sales Engineer working on printing systems and eventually progressing to manage the team I started on. After this,ย Iย went on to undertake many different roles such as aย Financialย Analyst, IT project manager, and IT Director within a large K-12 school system. I then decided to move back into sales as a pre & post-sales consultant, and Systems Engineering Manager before coming to VMware.ย
VMware Careers:โฏShare with us what attracted you to join VMwareโs SLED (State, Local Government, and Education) team.
Bill de Dufour:ย As aย formerย SLED customer I witnessed first-hand how VMware made an impact on my organization. With their technology, what would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and take months to accomplish couldย nowย be done inย hoursย at little cost.ย The most important impact VMware made for me was not the cost savings, but the agility to meet my constituentโs needs quickly and effectively.ย
VMware Careers:โฏHowย long have you been at VMware and how hasย VMwareย changed since you joined?ย ย ย
Bill de Dufour:ย I joined VMware in 2017, and the first thing I noticed was how open and welcoming everyone is hereย and that persists to this day.ย We doย not have the feel of a large company with a monolithic perspective. We still have a โstart-upโ feel, where everyone is willing to help, and pitch in to get things done.ย
VMwareโs focus has changed since I started here. When I joinedย our customers were typical end-users orย ITย managers. Today with ourย broadย portfolioย of world-class solutions, we are having strategicย multi-year visionย conversationsย withย CIOโs and withย theirย customers.ย ย
VMware Careers:โฏWhat has been the biggest lesson you have learned as you progressed in your career?ย
Bill de Dufour: I believe learning to leverage VMwareโs internal network of people andย solutions is probably the single most important lesson I have learned.ย If you think someone has likely done something before, they probablyย have. Couple this with ourย โstart-upโ persona, and it is easy to get insightsย and expertise to address our customerโs challengesย quickly.ย
VMware Careers:โฏYour teamย in SLEDย is hiring. Can you tell us more about your organizationโsย mission and why people should join?ย ย ย
Bill de Dufour: SLED is a unique business, and one of the most rewardingย from my perspective. What makes SLED unique is that ourย customersย are typically not in competition with each other, in fact, they typically are very willing to share,ย ย be open with their counterparts, and are driven by a higher missionย โ to serve their citizens, students, andย patients.ย Ultimately we are serving those who serveย others, byย providingย innovative &ย creative solutionsย ย
VMware Careers:โฏIf someone reading this was coming for an interview with you tomorrowโฏ,โฏwhatย interview tips would you give them?ย
Bill de Dufour: I would share threeย things with them.
1)ย Get your stories ready.ย I want to hear how you have delighted those who you serve, and how you did it.ย ย
2) Look up ourย EPIC2 values. Review our corporateย culture, and understand that this is truly how we do business.ย
3) Come prepared to ask me questions, for me, interviews are not just me getting to learn about you, but you getting to learn me and the VMware team and culture.ย
When I hire, Iย want to make sure thereย areย great synergies that flow both ways, thatย isย what I believe makesย a fantastic partnership!
