Mission Connection Healthcare has released a guide on disorganized attachment, covering symptoms, causes, and therapy programs for adults.

-- Mission Connection Healthcare has published a new guide on disorganized attachment, also known as the fearful-avoidant attachment style, and how it manifests in adults. In this latest resource, the mental health center highlights causes, behaviors, and mental illnesses associated with the attachment style and possible treatments that can help individuals recover from their experiences.

Disorganized attachment is characterized by patterns of inconsistency in attachment behaviors that usually arise in childhood. According to Mission Connection’s guide, a child with disorganized attachment may alternate between anxious and avoidant tendencies depending on their circumstances. This attachment style often develops when the child’s primary caregiver is a source of both safety and fear, and it is especially common within families with a history of domestic violence and untreated mental health issues; it has also been linked to emotionally neglectful or extremely critical parenting.

Mission Connection’s guide adds that children with disorganized attachment often experience the desire to flee the caregiver and approach them simultaneously, resulting in conflicting needs that can lead to confusion. If left untreated, these issues may persist into adulthood, causing mental health disorders and relationship issues.

In adults, disorganized attachment may manifest as difficulties regulating emotions, a persistent fear of abandonment or loss, low self-esteem, and a negative view of other people. These symptoms can cause the individual to withdraw from intimacy, react aggressively when their needs are threatened, and have difficulty initiating and maintaining healthy relationships; at the same time, they may seek closeness after episodes of avoidance or appear needy.

Mission Connection’s guide says that specific dissociative behaviors, such as depersonalization, derealization, dissociative amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder, also frequently occur as a result of disorganized attachment, typically as a stress response to a situation that is perceived as threatening.

Individuals affected by disorganized attachment may need to develop security later in life to begin healing. Mission Connection's team says that recovery can be achieved through therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy or trauma-informed therapy, both of which are known to be particularly effective. These treatments can also address depression, PTSD, anxiety, and other mental illnesses that commonly arise from the fearful-avoidant attachment style, potentially leading to more positive outcomes for the patient.
