New Well Polished Survey Suggests the Gender Divide in Household Cleaning is Changing

Well Polished’s survey of more than 1,500 customers suggests a gender divide in household cleaning remains, but the gap is closing among younger couples.

-- Well Polished, a national cleaning agency that matches customers with trusted local cleaners for regular housework, deep cleans, and more, has surveyed over 1,500 customers and 500 local cleaners to gain insight into the UK’s cleaning habits, yielding some interesting findings. Over 75% of respondents said they have witnessed a clear gender divide when it comes to household chores, and 77% suggested that there are specific cleaning tasks that are completed by one gender. However, 59% said that cleaning responsibilities are changing with men participating more in the household chores in recent years.

Across all responses, women were identified as completing 8,901 tasks, while men were identified with 3,583 tasks. As such, the survey found that women still do the majority of household chores, being named over 150% more frequently than men across all task types.

Dusting, ironing, laundry, and cleaning bathrooms are overwhelmingly seen as women's responsibilities. However, men are more likely to take on tasks like emptying the bins, garden maintenance, and window cleaning—often one-off or outdoor jobs.

Vacuuming and mopping saw more balanced responses, suggesting these are becoming more shared responsibilities. Meanwhile, general tidying remains heavily skewed towards women, reinforcing traditional domestic roles.

Despite the divide, many respondents noted positive change, stating “Men are participating more” and “Cleaning responsibilities are becoming more equal,” suggesting the tide may be turning and a growing awareness and change in household dynamics, with younger or more modern households leading the way.

Janine Campbell, Owner of Well Polished, says things were changing. "In my experience, we’ve definitely seen a shift in attitudes toward household chores. More men are stepping up, particularly in younger households, but the reality is that traditional gender roles still linger, especially when it comes to certain tasks that are seen as 'men’s jobs' or 'women’s jobs.' What’s really interesting is that it's not always about willingness, but confidence—many people avoid tasks they feel unsure how to tackle, regardless of gender. Education and open conversations about household fairness are key to breaking down these old perceptions."
