The Baltic Travel Company, which specialises in custom and unique travel experiences to regions across the Balkans, Arctic, Nordics, and Scandinavia, has shared some insights into the sharp increases in interest in Greenland holiday packages and tours.

Partly driven by the renewed focus on the country following comments made by President Trump but also owing to the growing demand for holidays away from conventional resorts, Greenland’s tourism market recorded a 14% increase in international arrivals in January 2025, with forecasts that show this trend is expected to continue at pace.

Understanding Why Greenland Has Experienced Significant Increases in Tourism

President Trump’s repeated mentions of Greenland, stated intention to ‘buy’ the island and focus on the Danish autonomous territory as a location essential to international and national security have undoubtedly raised Greenland's profile as a tourist destination.

The statistics show that visitors arriving in Greenland by cruise ship or choosing to explore the coastlines by sea reached over 76,000 in 2023, while US visitors have increased by 49% year on year, and hotel overnight stays grew from 210,000 to 355,000 in the space of ten years.

Despite the unwelcome nature of the US President’s comments, media attention has created a step change in awareness of the self-governed island. New audiences are being exposed to imagery of Greenland’s startling landscapes, raw beauty, protected wildlife species and cultural heritage.

However, this is only one of the underlying reasons behind spikes in demand. The National Tourism Board of Greenland has been investing heavily in campaigns and educational initiatives to broaden understanding of what Greenland has to offer and what makes it so special, creating demand for Greenland travel experiences where guests can see the wonder of the Northern Lights in person.

Greenland’s Expanding International Travel Network

Developments in the Greenlandic travel infrastructure, including the opening of Nuuk International, the first international airport in Greenland, have made it considerably easier, faster, and more sustainable to visit Greenland.

Previously, travellers would typically fly into one of the major Danish airports and then schedule a connection via a small plane or boat. This created a more laborious journey and one with higher than necessary carbon production owing to the multiple transport modes involved.

Greenland's first global aviation hub has augmented demand, with regional carriers, including Air Greenland and Icelandair, announcing new routes and international operators like United Airlines scheduling the first-ever direct flights between New York and Greenland, which will begin this summer. SAS, Scandinavian Airlines, is also adding new Nuuk flights.

There are further plans to expand Ilulissat Airport in 2026. Currently, it is a small regional airport that is being extended to include a 2,200-metre runway with the capacity to handle larger international flights.

Changing Trends and Appetites for Greenland Tourism Packages

Birthe Nielsen, Managing Director of the Baltic Travel Company says, ‘Greenland has always been an incredible destination, and we’ve taken great pride in organising travel plans for our guests over the years. Many choose Greenland as part of an Aurora Borealis adventure or want to head somewhere off the beaten track where they can enjoy quality time and make unforgettable memories with family and loved ones.

However, we've certainly seen huge increases in enquiries, often from guests who have discovered Greenland through the media and have been inspired to visit the Arctic wilderness first-hand, with wild scenery that includes soaring mountain peaks, deep icy fjords, miles of coastlines and vast glaciers.

There has also been a surge in interest in outdoor winter activities and wildlife encounters, with the Greenlandic landscapes and waters home to humpback and fin whales, polar bears and seals, with opportunities to travel during the Midnight Sun summer season to see migrations or fly in the winter when the polar night offers a perfect Northern Lights backdrop.

The opening of Nuuk Airport last year has played a big part in making Greenland more accessible to international visitors. Still, we've also recorded considerable changes in demand for eco-friendly tourism, with many packages focusing on sustainability, carbon offsets, and cultural experiences, learning about the rich Inuit history.

From a travel perspective, this enthusiasm and interest are positive, and we'd encourage any guests keen to visit Greenland, learn more about family-friendly, festive, active or romantic luxury breaks to get in touch or review our vast catalogue of customisable itineraries to experience Greenland for themselves.’
