Author, board director and former association chief executive Veta T. Richardson is relaunching her career development book, Take Six: Essential Habits to Own Your Destiny, Overcome Challenges, and Unlock Opportunities, alongside an interactive workbook with exercises, videos and tools.

-- Veta T. Richardson, a corporate board director, adjunct law professor and the former president and CEO of the Association of Corporate Counsel, is relaunching "Take Six: Essential Habits to Own Your Destiny, Overcome Challenges, and Unlock Opportunities." Published by ForbesBooks, the book reached Amazon’s #1 bestseller ranking after its release. The relaunched second edition pairs the original book with a forthcoming Take Six Interactive Workbook, which adds exercises, videos and practical tools designed to help readers turn the book’s guidance into daily habits.

The book's relaunch comes as professionals face growing pressure to keep their skills and careers moving forward. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that workers can expect 39% of their core skills to change by 2030. At the same time, LinkedIn’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report found that only 36% of organizations surveyed had mature career development programs, while the rest had limited programs or were just starting out. Together, the findings suggest that many professionals will need to take an active role in managing their own development.

Take Six is built around six habits that Richardson identified from her own career, which took her from staff attorney to chief executive and board director. The book guides readers to Take Stock, Take Risk, Take Credit, Take a Hand, Take a Stand and Take Command, while remaining mindful of the importance of self-care.

“For years, I didn’t recognize the behaviors that were guiding my own career. It was only on reflection that I could name the six habits that kept putting me in a position to pursue opportunities and help others succeed,” Richardson said. “Take Six was my way of making those habits visible, so readers can adopt them deliberately rather than by chance.”

The Interactive Workbook is structured to help readers practice one habit before adding the next, rather than attempting to change everything at once. That incremental approach reflects research on habit formation. A widely cited study by researchers at University College London, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, found that it took participants an average of 66 days for a new daily behavior to become automatic, with wide variation from person to person.

“Reading about a habit and practicing it are two different things,” Richardson said. “The workbook is designed to close that gap. It gives readers exercises, short videos and tools to work through each habit at their own pace and apply it to their own careers.”

Mentoring has been a consistent thread throughout Richardson’s career. Before leading the Association of Corporate Counsel, she served as executive director of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. She currently teaches as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, speaks at legal association conferences and workshops, and advises organizations through her consultancy, Oakton Ventures, LLC. The relaunch of Take Six and its Interactive Workbook extends that mentoring work to a wider audience of professionals.
