Escaped murderer Ramone Alston was captured shortly before 2 a.m. Friday at a hotel on Cloverleaf Parkway in Kannapolis. Jacobia Crisp was arrested in Alamance County and charged with felony aiding and abetting a fugitive.

Escaped murderer captured near Charlotte; woman charged with helping him

First, the escaped inmate serving a life sentence for murder is now back in custody after nearly three days on the run. Thank you for joining us. I'm Dan Haggerty. Ramon Alston eluded capture for days. But this video here shows his early morning arrest. This is after officers tracked him down near a hotel in Charlotte concluding a frantic 72 hours. Wr Os Heidi Kirk joining us live from the emergency operations center in Raleigh where we got details about this capture a little bit earlier today. And boy, this has been top of mind for everybody. Since Tuesday, more than 300 investigators from 19 different law enforcement agencies were involved in this search for a and just today, many hours ago, we got to hear from some of those officials since his capture, a 72 hour search for Ramon Alston ended here at the Mike Hotel in Canna Polis just before 2 a.m. His recapture happened without injury to anyone, which is a significant and reassuring outcome for all of us. State officials wouldn't share the details of what pointed them to Can Napolis, but they did tell us a woman is now facing charges for helping him escape this woman, Jacobia Crisp was taken into custody in Alamance County. Can you describe the relationship that you may have uncovered between Austin and Crisp? So it's our understanding that the relationship began several months ago between uh our inmate who's now back in custody and Jacobia. Um I will tell you that that relationship was by phone mostly and it was developed after he became incarcerated. Alston escaped from authorities Tuesday as they took him to UN C Hospital's Hillsboro Campus for treatment. It's unclear if the escape was planned in advance or not. But officials tell us the investigation is false from over. They're working to find out if all worked with another accomplice and how exactly he was able to get out of custody. In the meantime, the sheriff tells us there's some pride in how it was handled so much has been learned about how to keep our community safe. And officials tell us that all is back in custody at the Grandville facility. And of course, we're going to continue reporting on this story and following up with additional questions. We do know at this point, he's going to continue serving his life sentence and might face additional charges for his escape. He news live in Raleigh. Thank you to Heidi.
